Bowers' Son Reacts To Father's Death In Racing Accident
Steven Bowers Sr. of Topeka, passed away Saturday night from injuries sustained in an accident during a race at Thunder Hill Speedway.

TOPEKA (WIBW) -- Steven Bowers Sr. of Topeka, passed away Saturday night from injuries sustained in an accident during a race at Thunder Hill Speedway.
During the last lap of a B modified race Bowers was invloved in a wreck around turn one. According to reports from mulitiple witnesses the jaws of life were not present at the time of the wreck.
According to the Jackson County Sheriffs office, Bowers was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Thunder Hill Speedway owner Mike Henry was contacted by WIBW and declined several requests for an interview.
According to Larry Lowrey a fellow racer of Bowers, "The tracks need to wake up more than anybody. Tracks have to be prepared, if we aren't prepared thats part of the circle that will cause the hindrance of all the positive things we can do."
The web site www.inthepits.net has a memorial tribute set up for Bowers, who was well know among Kansas racing circles.
Bowers was 49.
A public viewing will be held from 4 to 9 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Bowers' funeral will be 10 am Friday morning at the church.

I'm VERY late to this, but I am in the UK. I realise this is a few years ago, and things may have changed. I am also very sad to hear of ANY racers death. But:- F1 had a strike in favour of safety. Get a helicopter, have paramedics, have the gear to cut a FRIEND out of a wreck. It is only money. Ask the crowd , 'pay 2 bucks more to save a hero driver', hell I would. RIP, and sorry for all loss in racing. Mark.x
I have known the family since Steven's wife was young. We were all family, have always felt, we still are. I have a picture of Steve jr. holding a two lire pepsi bottle, less than two yrs. old. Steve Sr. was so proud of his wife and sons. He was a very rare person, as I remember, happy, and loved life. I am so sorry we could not attend service's, but we have cried, and thought of Vicki, and the family. What a huge loss for the racing families, also.
May God bless the Bowers family. I worked with Steve and he truly put others first. I know he loved his family and his sport.
