LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas linebacker James Holt will play in the Western Refining Texas Vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge on Jan. 31. The third annual game will take place at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Central time and will be televised on CBS College Sports Television.
The game was set up to feature collegiate seniors from the state of Texas vs. players from around the nation. However, Holt, a native Oklahoman, will be playing on the Texas team.
Holt capped his Kansas career by being named All-Big 12 Second Team by the league’s coaches and First Team by the Associated Press. The 6-3, 226-pounder from Altus, Okla. earned Insight Bowl Defensive MVP honors in his final game at KU.
In the Insight Bowl victory against Minnesota, Holt registered eight tackles, including three sacks. He finished the season by recording at least one sack in six consecutive games.
Holt led the Jayhawks in tackles with 105 in 2008. He also recorded 19.5 tackles for loss, including 10 sacks, while forcing six fumbles and recovering two more. He added one interception and one pass break up as well.
His 0.46 forced fumbles per game ranked third in the nation, while he was tied for 11th nationally in tackles for loss (1.50), tied for 21st in sacks (0.77) and tied for 77th in tackles (8.08).
Holt finished his Jayhawk career with 239 tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks after starting as both a junior and senior. As a junior he recorded 99 tackles with 13 tackles for loss and two sacks.
“I am glad that I get to play one more game with a Kansas helmet on and hopefully do well and represent the school well,” he said.
The game and week of practice also gives Holt another opportunity to showcase his ability to professional scouts.
“You want to take advantage of every opportunity that you can,” he said. “The scouts will get to see us running drills, practicing and then playing in the game.”
Holt will leave for El Paso on Sunday. Players in the game will go through NFL testing, interviews with scouts and practice all week. The players will also visit local schools and hospitals during their week in town.
