(August 30, 2008) ? The Kansas City Wizards lost 2-1 Saturday night to the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium in a tightly contested match. San Jose opened the scoring just before halftime, but the Wizards came back to tie the game midway through the second stanza. San Jose then added a late goal to seal victory and run their unbeaten streak to seven MLS matches.
Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and the Wizards defense kept San Jose off the scoreboard until late in the first half, making outstanding saves in the 1st and 42nd minutes. Hartman stonewalled former teammate Scott Sealy from the doorstep just seconds into the game after the Trinidad and Tobago international got through behind the defense. Later in the half, Hartman stopped an initial cross from forward Arturo Alvarez then quickly got to his feet to parry a rebound effort from midfielder Ronnie O?Brien over the bar.
San Jose got on the score sheet in the 44th minute when O?Brien connected with Alvarez. O?Brien cut inside a defender and lofted a left-footed cross to Alvarez at the back post. The newly acquired forward rose to meet the ball and snapped it inside the far post from close range for a 1-0 lead.
Kansas City put on an excellent display of possession over the first 25 minutes of the second half after the introduction of Argentine playmaker Carlos Marinelli, and the Wizards leveled the score in the 64th minute through Davy Arnaud. Designated Player Claudio Lopez started the play, swinging the ball wide out of midfield for Michael Harrington working up the right flank. Harrington served in an early ball, with striker Josh Wolff making a dummy run through the area to clear space for Arnaud. Arnaud struck the ball past goalkeeper Joe Cannon on the first touch from close range to tie the score 1-1.
San Jose then scored the winner in the 83rd minute through newly signed attacker Darren Huckerby. Brazilian playmaker Francisco Lima served a cross to striker Ryan Johnson at the back post, and Johnson rose above a defender to head the ball across the face of goal. Huckerby completed a long run by slamming the ball into the back of the net with his head from close range. It was his 3rd goal in six matches singe joining the Earthquakes last month from Norwich City in England?s League Championship, and the tally marked his first game-winning goal in MLS.
The Wizards travel to Houston next Sunday for a 2 p.m. CT match against the two-time defending MLS Cup Champion Houston Dynamo. The game will be broadcast live nationally on Telafutura (Spanish) and locally on Metro Sports (English). Kansas City fell to Houston in the 2007 Western Conference Championship Match, one game short of MLS Cup. Kansas City?s next home contest comes Saturday, September 13 against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The match will be played at Arrowhead Stadium at 4 p.m. CT and broadcast nationwide on HDNet. International superstar David Beckham is scheduled to make his first-ever appearance in Kansas City.
