Kansas City - Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium is becoming quite the showplace for college football. It was announced today by officials of both universities that Kansas State University and Iowa State University have reached an agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs to play its games in 2009 and 2010 at Arrowhead Stadium.

“The 2009 Iowa State-Kansas State game will be our 14th Division I-A college football game at Arrowhead,” Chiefs President Carl Peterson commented. “This was something Founder Lamar Hunt envisioned when Arrowhead was built and we are excited to continue hosting college football at a new and renovated Arrowhead in 2009 and 2010. I want to thank athletic directors Jamie Pollard of Iowa State and Bob Krause of K-State for their efforts in putting this together. We wish both universities the very best in their growing football programs.”

“We are very excited to provide our players an opportunity to play two football games in a National Football League stadium,” Iowa State head Coach Gene Chizik said, whose team is the home team in the first game between the two schools scheduled for next year. “We fully expect a large contingent of fans traveling down I-35 and we plan to host a significant pep rally in conjunction with the Iowa State University Alumni Association both years. Arrowhead Stadium is one of the most historic facilities in the NFL and our student-athletes will remember the experience forever.”

Kansas State head coach Ron Prince echoed Chizik and said, “showcasing our brand on a big-time stage and in an NFL stadium is a tremendous asset to our program. The Kansas City area is a major market for our institution and we couldn’t be more pleased to face our North division opponent at Arrowhead Stadium.”

The Big 12 match-ups between the Cyclones and Wildcats will take place on Oct. 3, 2009, (Iowa State as the home team) and Oct. 9, 2010 (Kansas State as the home team). Tickets for the 2009 game will initially be made available, as a voluntary check-off, to all Iowa State and Chiefs season-ticket holders. Kansas State fans may purchase through the K-State Ticket Office, Arrowhead Stadium Box Office or online at www.kcchiefs.com, but will not be a part of the university’s season ticket package for either season. Tickets for the general public will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis later in the spring.

The athletic departments will each receive a minimum guarantee of $1.8 million from the Chiefs, payable over two years, for their participation in the series. Both departments have the opportunity to share in additional revenue based upon actual attendance.

Arrowhead Stadium has hosted or is scheduled to host 23 collegiate games since ’72, including five Big 12 Conference Championship Games. The University of Kansas met the University of Missouri at Arrowhead last year and will do so again this year. Division II powers Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri State have a long tradition of match-ups here as well dating back to 2002 where the game set an unofficial NCAA Division II attendance record.

The Cyclones last played in Arrowhead Stadium in 2002, facing Florida State in the Eddie Robinson Classic. Kansas State participated in the 2000 Eddie Robinson Classic, the 2003 Black Coaches Association Game and the 2003 Big 12 Championship.
