BEIJING (AP) _ The first day of play at the 2008 Summer Olympic
games in Beijing is underway. Medals are being awarded at several
points around town with no American yet stepping up to a podium.

BEIJING (AP) _ The wife of a member of the U.S. Olympic team has
won the first gold medal of the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. The
woman in question is Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic. The
wife of American shooter Matt Emmons finished first in the 10-meter
air rifle. Emily Caruso of Fairfield, Connecticut, finished 15th
for the best American finish.

BEIJING (AP) _ Competition in the pool gets underway today at
the National Aquatics Michael, or as it's been nicknamed the Water
Cube. Today's action marks the debut for Michael Phelps in the 2008
games. There are no medals being awarded today, those will come
tomorrow.

BEIJING (AP) _ The U.S. women's basketball team is in action
later today. The defending gold medalists are facing the team from
the Czech Republic. The U.S. has won five of the last six Olympic
gold medals.

BEIJING (AP) _ An American tourist was killed today, and another
one injured, by a Chinese man. The incident took place in downtown
Beijing at a popular tourist attraction. After the attack, the man
committed suicide. The U.S. Olympic Committee says the tourists are
relatives of a men's volleyball coach.
