September 28, 2013 - Brent Wilson moved into a tie for fourth in single season touchdown passes as Emporia State defeated Northeastern State 45-24 on Saturday at Jones Field at Welch Stadium. Wilson finished the game 27 of 41 for 410 yards and five touchdowns and added 75 rushing yards on 13 carries for the Hornets.
The RiverHawks got on the board first with a 26 yard touchdown run by Terrance Dixon on their opening drive. The Hornets tied the game on a 52 yard pass from Wilson to Austin Willis with 3:41 left in the period. Kavaski Ervin blocked a RiverHawk punt with 1:43 left in the quarter and Emporia State took a 14-7 lead on a 13 yard pass from Wilson to Ervin with :02 left in the first quarter.
Thor Long found Nick Whitlow for a 19 yard score to tie the game at 14 with 11:47 left in the half. Wilson and Ervin connected again four plays later on a 60 yard pass to put the Hornets up 21-14 with 10:41 remaining in the half. The RiverHawks scored the final points of the half on a 44 yard field goal with 4:14 left as the Hornets took a 21-17 lead into the locker rooms.
The Hornet defense tossed a shut out in the third quarter while the offense got a 41 yard field goal from Kuhns and another touchdown pass from Wilson, this one to Ray Ray Davis to take a 31-17 lead into the final quarter.
A 39 yard pass from Wilson to Willis put the Hornets up 38-17 and Antonio Brown scored on a three yard run to give the Hornets a 45-17 lead with 6:26 remaining. The RiverHawks got the final score of the day much like their first of the day on a 21 yard run by Dixon with 3:24 left for the final score of 45-24.
Wilson found seven different receivers on the day. Willis, the nations leader in receiving yards entering the game, finished with nine catches for 152 yards and two tuchdowns. Ervin ended with six catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns while Davis had six receptions for 74 yards and a score. Wilson led the Hornets in rushing with 75 yards while Antonio Brown had ten carries for 51 yards and a score.
Deshawn Dinwiddie had 11 tackles and a sack to lead the Hornet defense. Chris Poston, Aaron Matthews and Nick Schutte also had sacks for Emporia State.
Dixon led Northeastern State with 132 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns and six receptions for 88 yards. Thor Long was 18 of 30 for 218 yards and interception before leaving the game with an injury.
Victor Johnson had nine tackles to lead Northeastern State while Langston Jones was limited to seven solo tackles.
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday, October 5 when they travel to Lincoln. Kick-off from Jefferson City is set for 2:00 p.m.
With six games left in the regular season, Wilson is now tied with Sean Ponder for fourth on the Emporia State single season touchdown list with 18 touchdown tosses. The school record is 29 set by Tyler Eckenrode last season.
Willis now has 700 yards and eight touchdown catches through four games.
