Weekly Notes
Baseball
The Kansas baseball team will enter the final weekend of the regular season with control of its own destiny for the Big 12 Championship. The Jayhawks (9-15 in the Big 12), lead Oklahoma (8-15-1) by one-half game, and Kansas State (8-16) by a full game in the conference standings. A series victory over the Wildcats this weekend will send KU to Oklahoma City to participate in the Big 12 Championship. KU earned a 7-6 win over No. 14 Missouri on Sunday. Sophomore Robby Price collected five hits in the Jayhawks' only win of the series, going 5-for-5 with the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth.
Women's Golf
Kansas golfer Emily Powers fired a one-under par 71 to close out the NCAA West Golf Regional in Lincoln, Calif. Saturday. The sophomore, who qualified for the event as an individual, finished the three-day event with a 228 total. She shot rounds of 80-77-71, which tied her for 56th place overall. Powers improved 31 places during the event, as she was in a tie for 87th after the first two rounds. The Quincy, Ill., native once again closed her round strong. Starting her 18 on the 12th hole, she recorded back-to-back bogeys on #14 and #15 and went to three-over par after bogeying the first hole, her eighth hole of the round. After running off five straight pars, Powers birdied the 151-yard seventh hole, carded an eagle on the 452-yard eighth hole and added a birdie on her final hole with a two on the 137-yard 11th to finish one-under par for the day. Her under-par round was one of just 16 rounds under par on the final day on the Lincoln Hills Golf Club Course. USC won the team title by 15 shots over Arizona State. In all, eight teams and two individuals advanced to the NCAA Championship based on their play at the regional. Among those advancing were Big 12 school Oklahoma State, which tied for fifth.
Rowing
Kansas rowing will return to Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the South-Central Regional Regatta on May 17-18. KU last competed over the Melton Hill Lake on April 19-20 for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The two-day regatta is the qualifier for the NCAA Championships to be held in Sacramento, Calif. May 30-June 1.
Softball
A wild pitch proved costly for the Kansas softball team as they fell 4-3 to Nebraska Friday night during the opening round of the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City. Nebraska eventually made it to the championship game, where they were defeated by top-seeded Texas A&M. KU trailed early in the contest, but battled back to steal a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run double from senior Betsy Wilson. NU tacked on three runs, including the game-winner, in its next at-bat in the sixth.
Kansas wraps up the 2008 season 37-19 overall, its 24th season with 30 or more victories and the most single-season wins since 1997, head coach Tracy Bunge's first season at KU, when the team collected 38 wins.
Track and Field
Coming off their best finish in team history at the indoor conference championships in March, the women’s team will look to duplicate that success in Boulder, Colo. at the 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Championships May 16-18. The men return all three of their outdoor champions from 2007 and look to repeat this year in Colorado. Seniors Egor Agafonov (hammer throw) and Barrett Saunders (long jump) and sophomore Jordan Scott (pole vault) were victorious for the men at last year's conference meet. During the indoor season the women finished third at the Big 12’s and 10th at the NCAA for their best finish in team history at each meet. The women also return three champions from a year ago in seniors Ashley Brown (100-meter hurdles) and Crystal Manning (long jump) and junior Zlata Tarasova (hammer throw).
