May 10, 2008-Emporia State picked up seven provisional qualifying marks at the ATG Sports Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday at Witten Track in Welch Stadium. Five of those marks were improvements over previous marks set this season.
One of the biggest jumps may have come by the smallest of margins. Alex Pyle cleared 6-09.75 (2.08m) to move out of a five way tie for 12th in the nation into a three way tie for tenth. Matt Koelling came back from knee surgery to hit a provisional mark of 49-01.75 (14.98m) to jump from 25th up to 12th in the nation. This was just Koelling?s second outdoor meet of the season. The 400m relay team of Larry Beamon, Josh Schuler, Travis Lee and Kenton Lonberger ran 40.98, the second fastest time in ESU history, to move to 13th in the nation. Skyler Delmott improved his mark in the 300m steeplechase, moving up two spots to 25th in the nation. Doug Marshall hit his first provisional mark of the season in the triple jump and currently is ranked 26th in the nation.
ESU?s other provisional qualifiers were Connie Philips in the javelin and Craig Saalfeld in the high jump.
ESU will find out who has qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships sometime on Tuesday. The national meet will be held in Walnut, Calif. at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the Mt. San Antonio College campus.
