MARYVILLE, Mo.? The Washburn Ichabod tennis team swept Northwest
Missouri in doubles en route to a 5-2 win in the regional pod finals.
With the win, the Ichabods will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 for the
third time in school history and for the second season in a row. Matches
at the national tournament from from May 14 to 17 in Houston, Texas at
the 2008 NCAA Spring Sports Festival.
Washburn (14-6) gained some revenge after falling to the Bearcats in a
match in Topeka in a 5-4 match after taking two of the three doubles
matches.
In doubles play, Washburn's Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum won 8-3
at No. 1 doubles. Nathan Martin and Brad Johnston took an 8-6 win at No.
2 doubles and Ryan Ward and Drew Hanson won their match at No. 3 doubles
8-5.
Vliegenberg and Ward, who won in straight sets in the first meeting this
season at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, needed a third set to earn their
team?s final two points Friday. Vliegenberg held off Vigit Sehgal 6-4,
5-7, 6-2. Ward defeated Jake Saulsbury 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
Northwest (16-7) scored wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Daniel Usieto
defeated Nathan Martin 6-3, 6-2. Felipe Gennari beat Drew Hanson 6-4,
6-2. The final two singles matches had just gotten underway when
Washburn scored the decisive point.
