Kansas Men’s Basketball Hosts Holiday Clinic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Young Kansas men’s basketball fans and hopefuls learned from the best as the Jayhawk players and coaching staff hosted the team’s annual Holiday Clinic, Thursday afternoon inside Allen Fieldhouse.

The clinic ran from 1-3:30 p.m. and got underway with head coach Bill Self welcoming the crowd of campers and parents to Allen Fieldhouse and entertaining them with individual introductions for each member of his coaching staff as well as the players. More than 420 kids, ranging from first to sixth grades, turned out for the popular holiday clinic.

“This is a good day for us,” Self said. “I think our players really enjoy it, plus it’s really a way for kids to come out and be able to touch our guys. I really enjoy it and (the great turnout) is one of the reasons this is such a special place to play.”

Following Self’s introductions, his players swiped the microphone to sing happy birthday to the 10-year coach of the Jayhawks.

“I care about other people’s birthdays,” Self joked before the clinic started. “I don’t care about my own.”

From there, the large group was divided into three smaller ones and dispersed around the Fieldhouse, the basketball practice facility and the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The shared facilities provided extra room for practice drills and made it possible to provide one-on-one instruction.

With members of the team and the coaching staff anchored in each gym, the campers worked on skill sets that ranged from right and left-handed layups, jump shots, ball handling work and passing drills. After the rotating circuits wrapped up, the campers were allotted an hour-long autograph session before camp was dismissed.
