KANSAS CITY, Kan. – On Monday, T-Bones General Manager Rick Muntean announced the creation of the inaugural Northern League/American Association Challenge for the 2008 season. The four-game exhibition series will be hosted by the T-Bones and will take place at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4. The competition will match the Northern League’s Kansas City T-Bones and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks against the American Association’s Lincoln Saltdogs and the newly-formed Wichita Wingnuts.
“The T-Bones have had a spirited rivalry with Lincoln in the past and we look forward to beginning one with our new Kansas independent rival in Wichita,” said John Ehlert, president and CEO of the T-Bones. “I’d further hope this can be a precursor to inter-league play in coming seasons.”
The RedHawks will play the Wingnuts on Saturday, May 3, with the first pitch set for 2pm. Then the T-Bones will take on the Saltdogs that same night at 7pm. On Sunday, May 4, the teams will switch and the RedHawks will face the Saltdogs at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, with the first pitch set for noon. After that game’s conclusion, the T-Bones will take on their interstate rival, the Wingnuts, with the first pitch set for 5pm.
"This is a great idea and I hope this marks the first of many. Playing against good competition prepares clubs for the season,” said Harry Stavrenos, Northern League Director of Operations. “The crowds in Kansas City during the NL-AA Challenge will be big."
