David Moe has been suspended one game by ESU Athletic Director Kent
Weiser for Moe*s actions surrounding the end of regulation in the #7
Hornets 93-89 overtime loss to Newman on Wednesday.
*Even though collegiate athletics is intense and can at times be
highly emotional, it is important that coaches and players keep their
emotions in check,* said Weiser. *I appreciate coach Moe*s
intensity, but in this case, our expected levels of sportsmanship were
*First and foremost I want to apologize to the University, President
Lane, my players, our fans and the Emporia community,* said Moe. *I
can*t change what happened but we are all responsible for our actions
and you just can*t act that way.*
Moe was assessed two technical fouls with 54.6 seconds left and ESU
trailing 70-67. After Newman hit four free throws for a seven point
lead, ESU rallied to tie the game at 79-79 and send it to overtime.
*With as much character we have as a team, the head coach can*t go
out and act like an idiot,* said Moe. *I*m embarrassed but we*ll
learn from it and work to set a better example.*
Assistant coach Ben McCollum will assume the head coaching duties for
the #7 Hornets game on Saturday, December 8 at #22 Neb.-Omaha.
