LAWRENCE, Kan. – Darrell Arthur scored a season-high 17 points on eight of 10 shooting to lead fourth-ranked Kansas to an 87-46 victory against Northern Arizona in men’s basketball action here Wednesday night.
With the win Kansas improved to 4-0, while Northern Arizona fell to 3-2. The win was the 600th all-time for Kansas in historic Allen Fieldhouse as KU improved to 600-106 since the building opened in 1955.
Darnell Jackson added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds for Kansas, which shot a season-best 61.4 percent from the floor. Northern Arizona was led by a trio of players, who scored eight points, in Zarko Comagic, Josh Wilson and Cameron Jones.
Mario Chalmers had seven points and handed out six assists, while recording three steals in just 20 minutes for KU.
Kansas scored the first 12 points of the game as Darrell Arthur and Mario Chalmers each scored five points. Northern Arizona did not get on the scoreboard until Comagic hit a layup at the 13:22 mark.
After the visitors cut the lead to 20-4, Kansas scored the game’s next 11 points to lead 31-4 with 6:31 remaining in the half.
KU shot 60.7 percent in the first period while holding NAU to 16.7 percent as the Lumberjacks made just four of their 24 first half shots. Northern Arizona had 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, which Kansas turned into 13 points.
Kansas continued its torrid shooting pace in the second half, hitting 62.1 percent from the field. NAU settled down after the break and made 43.3 percent of its shots and had just three turnovers en route to being outscored just 43-36 in the second half.
Kansas led by as many as 47 points in the second half as the Jayhawks posted their biggest victory margin of the year.
In all 15 different Jayhawks saw action in the game and 10 different players scored. Conner Teahan came off the bench to add nine points as he hit three of three three-point attempts.
Kansas will host Arizona on Sunday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN. The game is part of the Big12/PAC10 Challenge.
