Kansas Wraps Up Season At Texas Tech Wednesday

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Seniors Emily Brown and Caitlin Mahoney and the Kansas volleyball team compete in their final match of the 2007 season Wednesday night in Lubbock, Texas. KU (12-17, 5-14 Big 12) and Texas Tech (7-20, 1-17 Big 12) will match up at 7 p.m. in the United Spirit Arena.

Jayhawks At A Glance

Kansas will enter Wednesday's contest on a two-match losing streak after dropping a four-game match at #12 Kansas State on Nov. 14 and a five-game decision versus Iowa State on senior day on Nov.17. Prior to the last three matches, the Jayhawks were hitting .176 as a team but in the last three contests, KU has swung at a .208 clip led by Natalie Uhart who is hitting a .285 efficiency in Big 12 matches. Uhart also blocks a team-high 1.14 balls per game and is one of five Jayhawks averaging over two kills a game in conference play with 2.57. Jenna Kaiser paces the offense with 2.99 kpg. Emily Brown is next with 2.67 kpg and adds a team-high 6.52 assists per game. Junior Savannah Noyes and freshman Karina Garlington pitch in 2.03 kpg each. Freshman libero Melissa Manda steadies the back row digging up 4.04 balls per game followed by Brown with 2.59.

Scouting Texas Tech

Texas Tech is tied with Colorado for last place in the conference having lost its last 17 conference matches. The Red Raiders' lone Big 12 win came in their season-opener on Sept. 12 against Colorado. Nine of TTU's last 10 matches have been three-game sweeps. As a team, the Raiders are hitting .146 led by Alicia Ostmeyer with a .219 clip. She also leads the team with 0.90 blocks per game. Michelle Flores and Amy Gandy average 2.66 and 2.65 kills per game respectively. Kourtney Dunnam runs the Red Raider offense with 9.68 assists per game.

The Series

Kansas trails 15-9 to Texas Tech in the all-time series but claimed the last meeting earlier this year. Coach Ray Bechard is 9-10 against the Red Raiders.

Last Meeting With the Red Raiders

Kansas volleyball notched a 3-0 sweep over Texas Tech in the teams' first meeting earlier this season on Sept. 22. Emily Brown recorded a triple double of 10 kills, 25 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Karina Garlington and junior Savannah Noyes also recorded double-digit kills to help lift the Jayhawks over the Red Raiders 30-27, 30-24 and 30-25. Freshman Melissa Manda and Katie Martincich pitched in 14 and 11 digs, respectively. Martincich also notched 18 assists for a double-double. Noyes, in addition to her team-best .400 hitting on 11 kills, added a career-high six assists. Garlington hit at an impressive .379 clip on 14 kills.

KU's Last Time Out

In arguably the most exciting match of the 2007 season, the Kansas volleyball team dropped a heart-breaking five-game decision to Iowa State on senior day Saturday, Nov. 17. After taking a 2-1 lead in the match, the Cyclones rallied back to take the final two games over KU in seniors Emily Brown and Caitlin Mahoney's final match at the Horejsi Family Athletics center. Mahoney recorded new career-highs with 13 kills and three assists during the match. The St. Louis, Mo., native also hit at a team-best .480 clip committing just one error in 25 attempts. Brown tied a team-best 15 kills and added 29 assists and 13 digs for her eighth triple-double of the season. The setter/outside hitter also had three service aces. The Jayhawks recorded 13 aces during the match, their best outing from the service line this year.

Jenna Kaiser added double-digit kills with 15, while Natalie Uhart and Savannah Noyes chipped in 11 each. Defensively, Melissa Manda led the back row effort digging up 24 balls. Karina Garlington and Melissa Grieb also had double figure digs pitching in 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
