LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Kansas baseball team announced its 2008 regular season schedule Monday. Head coach Ritch Price is looking to lead the Jayhawks to their fifth 30-plus win season in the last six years and a return to the NCAA Tournament with a schedule that includes games against 11 teams that qualified for the postseason last year.
Highlights of the schedule include a sixth-straight trip to Hawaii to open the season against Hawaii-Hilo, a non-conference game with Border Showdown rival Missouri at Kauffman Stadium on April 29. Home series against Big 12 opponents Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Missouri as well as non-conference home games versus NCAA Tournament participants Oral Roberts and Wichita State.
For the sixth year in a row, Kansas will open the season in Hawaii with a five-game set against the University of Hawaii-Hilo. All five games will be played in Kona, Hawaii. KU returns to the mainland to take on SEC powers Arkansas and Vanderbilt on the road the following week.
After a pair of games in Nashville, Tenn., against non-conference foes Xavier and Iowa, KU will play its home opener on March 5 against LeMoyne College and then host North Dakota State in a four-game series, beginning on March 7.
The Jayhawks' road to a Big 12 Tournament appearance begins on March 14, when it travels to defending conference champion Texas for a three-game series in Austin. KU will then participate in the Florida Spring Classic in Bradenton, Fla. During the in-season tournament, the Jayhawks will play six different opponents in a five-day span.
KU's first Big 12 series at Hoglund Ballpark will be March 28-30 against defending Big 12 Tournament champion Texas A&M. On the following Tuesday, the Jayhawks will welcome in-state rival Wichita State for the first of a home-and-home non-conference series against the Shockers.
The Jayhawks travel to Baylor for a Big 12 series on the first weekend of April and then opens a seven-game homestand which includes games against Northern Colorado, Texas Tech.
KU will then play seven straight on the road, facing Nebraska and Oklahoma State in back-to-back weekends with a trip to Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan. sandwiched in the middle.
The Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers are again scheduled to play a non-conference game at Kauffman Stadium. This year's tilt is set for Tuesday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
During the month of May, KU will play eight home games, including a three-game series against Missouri and the regular season finale at Hoglund Ballpark against Kansas State on May 16. The Jayhawks' final two regular season games will be May 17-18 in Manhattan, Kan.
