Champion Northwest has 10 first-team choices; Omon, Erspamer claim MVP awards
(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) -- Conference champion and No. 5-
ranked Northwest Missouri State had 10 first-team selections
to the All-MIAA Football Team, as chosen by the conference's
The Bearcats (9-1, 9-0 MIAA) had four unanimous selections
to the first-team, including the conference's Most Valuable
Offensive Player in senior RB Xavier Omon and the
league's Most Valuable Defensive Player in senior LB Jared
Omon leads the MIAA in rushing (156.6 ypg -- 4th in NCAA
Division II), scoring (15.6 ppg -- 2nd in NCAA-II) and all-purpose
yards (168.2 ypg -- 13th in NCAA-II).
He became the first player in NCAA history to log four
1,500-yard rushing seasons. Omon is a three-time first-team
All-MIAA choice (2004, 2006).
Erspamer was the Bearcats' leader on defense, with a teambest
8.1 tackles per game (6th in the MIAA), 6.7 solo tackles
per game and 10 tackles for loss.
Northwest's other unanimous selections were senior TE
Mike Peterson and senior OL Reid Kirby. Both are repeat selections

five first-team honors.
Senior Cary Williams picked up awards for both defensive
back (a unanimous choice) and kick returner.
He was joined by one other unanimous choice in senior OL
Eric Eisenbarth, along with senior DL Eric Butler and sophomore
LB Zach Watkins (the MIAA leader in tackles at 11.8 per
There were a total of eight unanimous selections to the All-
MIAA first team. Rounding out the list are junior OL Roger
Allen of Mineral Water Bowl qualifier Missouri Western (8-3,
6-3 MIAA) and senior DB Kendall Ricketts of Central Missouri
(7-4, 6-3 MIAA).
Western QB Drew Newhart was selected as MIAA Freshman
of the Year. He is the MIAA's fourth-rated passer (148.4
efficiency rating -- third-best among freshman signal-callers
in Division II).
Northwest's Mel Tjeerdsma was his peers' choice as Coach
of the Year. It is the ninth time he has been so honored, second
time in as many seasons.
