November 3, 2007--In the final home game of the 2007 season Emporia State put up a valiant effort but came up short in a 24-7 loss to #6 Northwest Missouri State.
The two teams played a scoreless first quarter, the first time this season NWMSU has failed to score in the opening frame. The first points of the game came on a Tommy Frevert field goal at the 10:28 mark of the second quarter. After a three and out be ESU, Northwest drove 78 yards on five plays for the first of two Xavier Omon touchdowns. Omon had the big play on the drive, breaking off a 39 yard run down to the ESU five yard line. He scored on the next play for a 10-0 Bearcat lead with 7:15 left in the half.
ESU responded with a 13 play, 84 yard drive to pull within 10-7 at the half. Eric Runge scored on a two yard rush to cap the drive. Sheldon Cook returned the kick-off to the Northwest 46 and the Bearcats drove down to the ESU 17 before Aaron Stubblefield picked off a Joel Osborn pass at the two with eight seconds. The interception ended the NWMSU scoring threat and kept the Hornets within three points at the half.
The teams traded punt on the opening four drives of the second half before Travis Lee picked off a Joel Osborn pass with 3:55 left in the quarter. The Hornets couldn't capitalize and after a 28 yard punt, NWMSU set up at the ESU 48 yard line. Omon scored his second touchdown of the game with 23 seconds left in the quarter for a 17-7 lead.
Northwest scored the final points of the game on an eight yard pass from Osborn to Mike Peterson with 2:13 left in the game for the final points of the game.
Seville Ko had 76 yards on 19 carries to lead ESU on the ground. Eric Runge was 12 of 32 for 96 yards and added 19 yards on 14 rushes. Jake Richter had 11 tackles and 2.0 TFL while Nathan Linsey had 10 tackles and 3.5 TFL for the Hornets. ESU picked off four passes with Jonathon Harris, Aaron Stubblefield, Travis Lee and Jeff Hoag each getting one.
Harlon Hill candidate Xavier Omon gained 230 yards on 25 carries and had two touchdowns for the Bearcats. Joel Osborn was 24 of 34 for 230 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions. Jared Erspamer had ten tackles with 2.5 TFL including a sack while Matt Robertson had 12 tackles for the Bearcats.
ESU will play their final game of the season at Pittsburg State on November 10. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium.
