November 2, 2007-In a match that saw 28 ties and 14 lead changes, the #17 Emporia State volleyball team fell in five games at #7 Truman on Friday night. ESU went five games despite getting out-hit .324 to .188 thanks to 16.0 blocks by the Hornets.
Game started with neither team going up by more than a point until ESU went on a 3-0 spurt to take a 12-9 lead. The Hornets would build their lead to 27-20 before the Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run to pull within 29-28. TSU would fight off five game points before Brittney Miller put down a kill from Ting Liu for the 30-28 win. Brianne Boner would lead ESU with six kills on .667 hitting and five blocks in the first game.
The Bulldogs took and early 9-3 lead in game two. ESU would battle back and pulled within 22-20 following back to back aces by Liu and a block by Miller and Hannah Carter. TSU would go on to outscore ESU 8-5 down the stretch for a 30-25 win.
It was all Truman in game three as the Bulldogs won 30-11. TSU hit .615 in the game and held ESU to -.107 hitting to take a 2-1 lead into game four. The Hornets trailed 11-7 in the fourth game before going on a 6-2 run to take the lead. There would be three ties and four lead changes before ESU went on a 5-0 run to take a 27-24 lead. Boner had two kills and two blocks during the run. The teams would trade points until Liu put away a kill for the 30-27 win to force game five.
Game five was tied at 8-8 before a 4-0 TSU run gave the Bulldogs a 12-8 lead on their way to the 15-10 match clinching win.
Arica Shepard had 20 kills for her fifth straight 20 kill match and added 17 digs. Brianne Boner had 13 kills on .462 hitting and a career and MIAA season high 14 blocks. Ting Liu added 54 assists and 12 digs.
The Hornets will play their final regular season game on Saturday against Missouri-Rolla in Kirksville, Mo. First serve is set for 4 p.m. ESU will play host to Northwest Missouri on Tuesday in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. First serve on Nov. 6 from White Auditorium is set for 7 p.m.
