Hornets Fall in OT

October 27, 2007-Emporia State had a season high 305 yards rushing with two backs over 100 yards, but could not overcome three missed field goals in a 33-30 overtime loss at Truman on Saturday afternoon.

Truman took the opening drive of the game and scored on a 38 yard touchdown pass from Matt Ticich to Steve D'Antonio for a 7-0 lead. ESU took the ensuing kick-off and drove 42 yards on ten plays to see Johhny Torres' 38 yard field goal attempt hit the right upright. The teams traded punts before Matt Demicoli intercepted a Ticich pass at the TSU 40 yard line. The Hornets then drove 40 yards on five plays capped by a 15 yard pass from Eric Runge to Paul Nichols. The extra point kick failed to leave ESU trailing 7-6 with 1:28 left in the quarter.

The Hornets outgained the Bulldogs 110 to 37 yards in the second quarter and took a 21-7 lead into the half. Runge threw his second touchdown of the game, a six yarder to Jarad Biggs, and gave the Hornets a 14-7 lead when his extra point pass was caught by Josh Koerkenmeier after a deflection. TSU had driven to the ESU 25 when Travis Lee intercepted Ticich and took it 92 yards for the score as time expired in the half. Torres kick gave the Hornets a 14 point lead going into the intermission.

ESU got the ball to start the second half, but turned it over when the center snap sailed over Runge's head out of the shotgun. TSU took over at the ESU 14 yard line, but the Hornet defense held the Bulldogs to a 26 yard field goal from Mickey Masucci. After a Hornet punt the Bulldogs drove to the ESU nine yard line before stalling out and settling for another 26 yard field goal from Masucci. The Hornets took the Bulldog kickoff and drove to the TSU 15 before missing a 32 yard field goal. Masucci would get the third quarter hat trick on the next drive as he booted a 38 yard field goal to pull the Bulldogs within 21-16 with 2:16 left in the third quarter.

Justin Wieser and Seville Ko would combine for 61 yards on five rushes on the next drive to put ESU up 27-16. Wieser started the drive with a 34 yard rush to the TSU 27 yard line. Ko took the next three handoffs and gained 12 yards for a first and ten at the Truman 15 yard line. Wieser came back in and took the ball to the endzone for a touchdown. The two point conversion failed and the Hornets took an 11 point lead into the fourth quarter.

Truman pulled within 27-22 on a 19 yard pass from Ticich to D'Antonio with 7:57 left in the game. The two point conversion failed to keep ESU up by five. The Hornets then drove 45 yards on seven plays setting up a 26 yard field goal attempt. Torres connected to give ESU a 30-22 lead with 4:11 left in the game.

Ticich would go five for five on the ensuing drive and cap it with a 48 yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Blue on third and four. Ticich hooked up with Tyler Fenton for the two point conversion to tie the score with 2:47 left in the game.

The Hornets couldn't take advantage of a Wieser seven yard gain on first down and punted to the Bulldogs with 1:19 left in the game. TSU drove to the ESU 15 yard line when Blake Ringwall sacked Ticich back to the 28 yard line on second down. After a one yard gain, Masucci missed a 44 yard field goal with 18 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

ESU had the ball first in the overtime and could only gain one yard before sending Torres out for a 41 yard field goal attempt that came up short. The Hornets held the Bulldogs to nine yards on TSU's possession setting up a 32 yard field goal for Masucci who put it through for the win.

Wieser had 127 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown while Ko added 106 yards on 19 carries for ESU. It was the first time since 2002 the Hornets had two players rush for 100 yards in the same game. Runge was seven of 14 for 40 yards, two touchdowns and an interception through the air and added 69 yards on 20 carries on the ground in his first start at quarterback. Defensively Matt Demicoli had 11 tackles, an interception, two pass break-ups and 1.5 TFL for the Hornets.
