Washburn defeated Emporia State 31-21. October 13, 2007-Emporia State outgained Washburn 435 yard to 412 yards
but two big plays by Brandon Walker led the Ichabods to a 31-21 win on
Saturday at Welch Stadium.
ESU trailed 17-7 and had been outgained 241 yards to 140 at the half.
The Hornets came out and controlled the third quarter, holding the ball
for 12:58 and outgaining the Ichabods 140 yards to 20 yards.
The Hornets pulled within 17-13 on a Seville Ko nine yard touchdown run
that capped a 13 play, 91 yard drive with 14:12 left in the game. Walker
went 70 yards on the second play of the ensuing possession to put WU
back up 24-13. ESU responded with a 16 play, 68 yard drive capped with
an Andre Sloan El two yard touchdown run. Sloan El connected with Sean
Partridge on the two point conversion to bring ESU within 24-21 with
6:12 left in the game.
Walker then came back with 78 of WU’s 81 yards on a four play drive
capped by his 68 yard touchdown with 1:06 left to ice the game.
Sloan El led ESU with 231 yards of total offense. He was 15 of 23 for
193 yards through the air and added 38 yards on 14 rushes and two
touchdowns. Andre Maupin had 159 all-purpose yards with four catches
for 84 yards and three carries for 75 yards. Ko added 66 yards and a
touchdown on 15 carries. Walker led Washburn with 153 yards and two
fourth quarter touchdowns on just ten carries.
Defensively ESU was led by Blake Ringwall and David Diener with ten
tackles each. Matt Demicoli, Jared Acree and Travis Lee all had
interceptions for the Hornets. Bruce Ringwood and Zach Watkins each had
11 tackles to lead the Ichabods.
The Hornets are back in action next weekend as they play host to
Missouri Western on ESU’s Homecoming. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at
