LAWRENCE, Kan. -
University of Kansas freshman forward Kaitlyn Cunningham has been named the Big 12 Conference's Newcomer of the Week for the week of Oct. 9. This marks the first time this season a KU soccer player has earned one of the conference's weekly awards.
Cunningham, a 5-foot-6 forward from Geneva, Ill., earned the recognition after scoring her first collegiate goal in Sunday's 4-1 win over Texas Tech in Lubbock. The freshman gathered a loose ball in Red Raider territory and beat the defense down the field for a break away goal in the second half.
Cunningham is the seventh different Jayhawk to record a goal this season, and the second freshman. In each of the last two Big 12 matches, Cunningham has recorded a shot, including a pair on Sunday.
Colorado sophomore Nikki Marshall was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while Texas A&M defender Nicole Ketchum was awarded the Defensive Player of the Week.
KU (3-8-2, 1-1-1 in Big 12) will play host to No. 23 Oklahoma State at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex at 4 p.m. Friday. For tickets, please call 1-800-34-HAWKS or log on to www.kuathletics.com.
