TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues won their sixth straight match over Emporia State with a 2-0 win in Yager Stadium. Jessica Mainz tied her own school record for the third time while recording her 12th and 13th goals of the season. She also set a school record for the most points in a season with her 31st of the year. Washburn will take on the defending champions, No. 13 Metro State on Sunday in Omaha, Neb.
Mainz scored her first goal of the evening on a midfield pass from Angela Wiseman to Danielle Ayala on a sliding kick from six yards out in the 27th minute to put Washburn up 1-0. That score would hold up through halftime as Washburn outshot the Hornets 11-0 in the first half.
In the second half, Mainz tied her school record for goals in a season with her 13th in the 60th minute off a crossing pass from Ayala putting Washburn up 2-0. The goal pushed Mainz up to 31 points (13 goals, 5 assists) to set a new high-water mark for points in a season.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues without making a save as Washburn outshot the Hornets 27 to 1. It was her fourth shutout of the season. In their first meeting on Sept. 8 in Emporia, Washburn outshot the Hornets 48 to 2.
