(September 7, 2010) – The Kansas City Wizards returned home from a 1-1 draw at Philadelphia on Saturday and now have two full weeks to prepare for a stretch of three games in seven days, beginning with a trip to play Chivas USA on Sunday, September 19.
Kansas City will have its first weekend off since the League’s World Cup break in June, and it comes in the midst of a challenging three-game road trip. The Wizards upset first-place Los Angeles 2-0 on August 28 and then earned another road result on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against the expansion Union.
The Wizards have moved into a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1-3 run in their last eight MLS matches. The streak has propelled the team into postseason contention, as Kansas City currently sits five points out of the final playoff spot with eight games remaining.
Three Kansas City players will be returning to training this week following participation with their national teams in international competition. Wizards leading goal scorer Kei Kamara started for Sierra Leone in a 1-1 draw against Egypt on Sunday in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Cairo, while defenders Shavar Thomas and Roger Espinoza are both expected to suit up for their national teams tonight in international friendlies. Thomas is part of the Jamaica squad that will play Peru at 7:00 p.m. CT in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Espinoza was called to the Honduran National Team for their friendly against Canada at 6:30 p.m. CT in Montreal.
Please note: The Kansas City Wizards match against the Houston Dynamo has been moved from September 11th to Wednesday, September 22nd at 7:30 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Tickets can be purchased by visiting KCWizards.com or by calling 888-4KC-GOAL. The Wizards are also now accepting initial payments for season tickets for the 2011 season, highlighted by the debut of Chivas Guadalajara star and Mexico international Omar Bravo, and the opening of Kansas City’s state-of-the-art soccer stadium next summer.
