KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Greg Biffle scored his first victory of
the season today _ even though he ran out of gas before crossing
the finish line _ in a wild race at the Kansas Speedway that
jumbled the Chase for the championship standings.
The Chase field imploded at the speedway, where rain and
impending darkness cut the race short by 85 miles. Seven of the 12
Chase drivers finished 30th or worse, and defending Nextel Cup
champion Jimmie Johnson reclaimed the points lead.
The race ended under caution because Juan Pablo Montoya blew a
tire with four laps to go. It should have set up an overtime
finish, but darkness forced NASCAR to run the final laps under
Biffle ran out of gas on the last lap, and local star Clint
Bowyer and Johnson both passed him before he reached the finish
line. But the win went to Biffle.
