LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas rowing will begin its 2007-08 season in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 29 for the Head of the Des Moines Regatta. The all-day event is the first of four fall competitions featuring the Jayhawk rowers. Kansas returns four seniors to a squad that has high expectations following its second place finish at the Big 12 Invitational last spring in Kansas City.
Kansas will see some familiar faces at the Head of the Des Moines as Kansas State, Tulsa and Drake will be rowing at the season-opening regatta. Last year, Kansas defeated K-State on three separate occasions, including a victory in the Kansas Cup on April 7. KU was scheduled to face Tulsa and Drake in a triangular regatta on March 31, but the event was cancelled due to high winds and a choppy current. In 2006, Kansas defeated the Golden Hurricane and Bulldogs in four of six races, including the First and Second Varsity Eight races.
The Head of the Des Moines will only feature the Kansas varsity roster. The Novice squad's season opener is a month away--on October 28--in Iowa City, Iowa, for the Head of the Iowa.
The race schedule and boatings are listed below. Check back with kuathletics.com for complete results following the regatta.
