Jose Contreras and the Chicago White Sox expected to be in an AL Central race this season. They were just not expecting to be in this one.
Chicago sends Contreras to the mound Tuesday night to face the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series which may decide who finishes last in the AL Central.
The fourth-place White Sox (68-88) are only one game ahead of last-place Kansas City (67-89) with six games remaining. The Royals failed to move into a tie with Chicago on Monday, losing 3-2 at Baltimore.
Chicago last finished at the bottom of a division in 1989 when it competed in the AL West, while Kansas City has ended up at the bottom of the Central in each of the last three seasons.
