LINCOLN, Neb. - Seniors Rebekah Green and Mandi Peterson each
collected second-place finishes to help the Kansas State women place
third after Friday's first day at the 2003 Midwest Regional
Championships being held at the Ed Weir Track Stadium at the
University of Nebraska.
Green and Peterson scored all 16 points for the Wildcats, as
the duo duplicated their runner-up finishes in the shot put and
javelin at the Big 12 Championships just a week ago. Green had a
mark of 52-4 in the shot put to finish second behind Nebraska's Becky
Breisch, who recorded a winning toss of 57-6.25. Peterson broke her
season-high by more than five feet in finishing second to Texas A&M's
Katy Doyle. Peterson, who had a previous season-high of 157-0 in
finishing second at the Big 12 Championships, posted a throw of 162-9.
In addition to the two medalists, K-State also had two
runners qualify for the finals of the 800 and 1,500 meters on
Saturday. Senior Amy Mortimer won the preliminary of the women's
1,500 with a time of 4:26.01. Junior Lysair Roman-DelValle finished
second in her heat and fourth overall in the 800 with a time of
2:11.31.
The Wildcat men's team had two qualify for Saturday's final.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Will Jones, Pat Agwu, Dusty McDonald
and Joseph Bennett posted a time of 40.33 to finish third in their
heat and eighth overall. Sophomore Erik Sproll finished seventh
overall and third in his heat of the 800 meters with a time of
1:51.16. Freshman Christian Smith also competed in the 800,
finishing 15th overall with a time of 1:54.22.
Following Peterson's second place finish in the javelin were
juniors Tabra Alpers, who finished 14th with a time of 142-1, and
Heidi Stinson, who posted a mark of 126-10 to place 24th.
Several other Wildcat women competed but did not advance to
the finals on Friday. Junior Queeneth Evurunobi posted a mark of
18-11.75 in the long jump to finish 18th. Sophomore Samatha Murillo
ran 55.96 in the 400 meters to finish sixth in her heat and 17th
overall. Freshman Breanna Eveland finished tied for 12th in the pole
vault, as she cleared a height of 12-0.50.
Several other Wildcat men also competed but did not advance
to the finals. Senior Brandon Solt posted a season-best time of
14.29 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish 18th overall and fourth in
his heat. Kyle Lancaster, Mike Kizinkewich and Marquis Clark all
cleared 6-8 in the high jump to finish 19th and tied for 23rd,
respectively. Senior Josef Karas just finished out of scoring range
in the long jump in ninth place with a leap of 24.00.75. Junior Adam
Walker recorded a toss of 166-10 in the hammer throw to finish 18th
overall and seventh in his flight. Sophomore Mathew Chesang ran
3:53.73 in the 1,500 meters to finish 15th overall and eighth in his
heat.
