Ways to Celebrate and Observe Flag Day

Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916.

While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate and observe the patriotism of the day:

* Fly the flag. If you don't know how to do it properly, learn how; a code passed by Congress in 1942 governs the handling and display of the U.S. flag. For more on Flag Etiquette, CLICK HERE.

* Have a picnic with family and friends and talk about what Flag Day means to you.

* Venture to a local observance.

* Throw and informal barbecue with all the fixings. Have guests don patriotic gear and fly the American flag.

- Go Caroling! Singing Christmas tunes are a sure fire way to get you in the Christmas spirit!
