Holiday Season Brings Increased Travel

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The holiday season means more people on the highways and in the sky. AAA officials project 38 percent of our region's population will be traveling this season.

AAA officials say 92.3 million Americans will be in cars and on planes, traveling 50 miles or more from Thursday, December 23rd, to January 2nd. Almost 86 million of those people are expected to travel by car, an increase of more than three percent nationwide.

Experts say a modest economic recovery is spurring the increased travel.

"Most people have their holiday plans made. This is a much more stable, more resilient holiday and so people tend to stick to their plans and if they have to cut back because of higher gas prices, they do it in other ways," says Topeka AAA official, Jim Hanni.

To be prepared for auto travel, experts recommend having an emergency kit with a blanket, water, flashlight, a charged cell phone and kitty litter.

At the airport, arrive even earlier than usual. Checking in online could save you some time. Remember the new safety checks, and be prepared for delays.

Patience is the key word this travel season. Experts also say don't forget to take a book or something to keep you occupied at the airport.

Safe and happy travels, from WIBW-TV!

Good ole' Fashion Family Fun

The holiday season is a time for peace, love, joy and of course, family time! So why not celebrate the Christmas cheer with some good ole' fashion family fun!?

Here are a few traditions you can start this year with your family:

- Set up a Christmas Tree (fake or real, small or large, just make it fun for the whole family!)
- Decorate! Even just a few strands of Christmas lights will do...
- Go Caroling! Singing Christmas tunes are a sure fire way to get you in the Christmas spirit!
- Do a random act of kindness. Don't forget what the season is all about! Why not buy a cup of coffee for a stranger? They'll smile. We're sure of it.
