Emporia State Hosts Biology Camp for Teens

EMPORIA STATE -- Students in third through sixth grades will spend the week of June 4th through 8th at Emporia State University for Biology Camp 2012. Each day will have a different focus and campers will be out with biology faculty and students working in the field.

(The camp required pre-registration through the Emporia Recreation Center and is already filled.)

The Biology Camp events include:
Monday, June 4 — Birds and Mammals
Students will observe birds through sight and song and examine animal tracks at Ross Natural History Reservation.

Tuesday, June 5 — The Biology of Worms
Students will dig for earthworms and harvest insects then return to campus for insect scoping, prepping and mounting.

Wednesday, June 6 — Aquatic Ecology
It’s time to get wet. Students will take water samples and learn how to do the “darter dance” when using a seine to capture fish for counting.

Thursday, June 7 — Forest Leaves & Plants
Students will collect plant samples then return to campus to preserve them and work in the laboratory.

Friday, June 8 — Insects, Reptiles and Amphibians
Turtle trapping is a highlight of this final day, which concludes with a cookout, slideshow and awards ceremony with family and friends.

Good ole' Fashion Family Fun

The holiday season is a time for peace, love, joy and of course, family time! So why not celebrate the Christmas cheer with some good ole' fashion family fun!?

Here are a few traditions you can start this year with your family:

- Set up a Christmas Tree (fake or real, small or large, just make it fun for the whole family!)
- Decorate! Even just a few strands of Christmas lights will do...
- Go Caroling! Singing Christmas tunes are a sure fire way to get you in the Christmas spirit!
- Do a random act of kindness. Don't forget what the season is all about! Why not buy a cup of coffee for a stranger? They'll smile. We're sure of it.
