TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- It's time to ring in the new year, but amidst the champagne and celebration, officials want you to remember the happy holidays can harbor danger.
Officials say alcohol-related crashes are up in Kansas, and New Year's Eve poses an even greater risk on the roads, that's why many businesses are offering free rides to help partiers get home safely.
Officials say there are 150 percent more driving fatalities on New Year's Eve than on any other day, so AAA has teamed up with Yellow Cab to provide free rides tonight for Shawnee County residents.
Last New Year's Eve, Yellow Cab took more than 1,000 phone calls, and gave 94 free rides.
You can call them from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday, at (785) 357-4444. They'll even take you back to your car the next day.
Briggs Auto will also pick up the "tab for the cab," call 1-866-300-2727 for a free ride in Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan and Junction City.
Pigskin's Sports Bar is offering free limo rides to and from their location in the Brookwood Shopping Center, their number is (785) 273-7300.
Officials also say the best defense against a drunk driver is to wear your seat belt.
