TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Roman Catholic archbishop for northeast Kansas says Gov. Kathleen Sebelius should refrain from taking Communion.

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, said Sebelius shouldn't participate in the sacrament until she repudiates her past support for abortion rights.

Naumann made his statements in a column for Friday's edition of the archdiocese's newspaper, The Leaven.

He said Sebelius' actions sent a ``spiritually lethal message.'' He cited her recent veto of a bill imposing new restrictions on abortion providers. Sebelius is Catholic but a consistent supporter of abortion rights.

Spokeswoman Nicole Corcoran said the governor hasn't seen the column.

It's about time that christians stand behind our moral code from God's word. I'm saddened that so many people, who mistakenly call thenselves christian, think abortion is acceptable. Preserving life should not be a political game and protecting a baby who just happens to relie on a woman for a few months of support should be a no-brainer.

Obviously Bernice has been paying attention in church. This has nothing to do with Church State separation. Mrs. Sebelius has made it publically clear that she does not support the Doctrine of the Catholic church. The fact that is was by a political decision is not the issue. The fact that she made her views public is. When someone makes it clear that they refuse to accept the word of God then they should not accept the Eucharist. The church will dilligently help her and she will eventually have to decide for herself if she accepts in the teachings of Christ or not. God bless Archbishop Naumann, and God bless Kathleen Sebelius.

Thank You Nauman...It is about time someone speaks up about this....Remember Abortion stops a being heart.....a breathing lung....A flowing vein

Thank you Sondra! My first reaction to this story was just that. What happened to the separation of church and state? Gov. Sebelius speaks for the State of Kansas, not all of us are Catholic nor do we all believe that one religion dictates our moral stance.

I feel people are just getting too stupid these days and they are just picking on Gov.Sebelius!I'm glad she is strong and has her own opinions.I think it should be up to the woman ONLY to decide if she wants an abortion or not.And as for the bishop-hes only a man,He's not GOD! And besides God is not a monster like they make him out to be!

What part of separation of church and state doesn`t the Archbishop understand???? I do believe the church has enough messes of it`s own to clean up.

I have a friend whom had an abortion 20 yrs ago, and to this day she regrets it. She has scince then, got counseling from her Priest and Therapy, she has asked for forgivness in this. She can now recieve Holy Communion and always prays for the end of abortion. She stills thinks about the life she had taken away 20 years ago. What that person would be like today? But Jesus has forgiven her. Now, please Governor Kathleen take a stand and do what is right for life...........

AMEN! Thank you Archbishop. I have been a Catholic all my life 40 years. I stand up for this! AMEN! Life is so precious, and a gift from the LORD. She needs to do the same. Does she just do it for show? C-mon Sebelius, take a stand and man up and agree to stop the murders of innocent babies. As a former fetus, I oppose abortion!!!

God bless Archbishop Naumann for speaking out against our Governor's actions. Gov. Sebelius needs our prayers. A repented sinner, in a position of power can lead many people back to God.
