TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Legislators want to change the presidential primary in 2012 to the first Saturday in February.

The change was included in the Voter ID bill sent Tuesday to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Kansas last had a presidential primary in 1992. Legislators since then haven't provided funding for primaries. This year, Democrats and Republicans conducted statewide caucuses for selecting presidential candidates.

The law says a primary will be on a date set by the secretary of state in concert with at least five other states, or if that isn't possible, then the first Tuesday in April.

Under other parts of the compromise Voter ID bill, Kansans would have to show photo identification to vote starting in 2010.

It requires all voters except members of the military and other citizens overseas, disabled or age 65 or older to show an ID with a photo and signature each time they vote. It calls for the state to provide free photo IDs to low-income people.

The 27-3 vote Tuesday by the Senate was followed by a 67-56 House vote.

The proposal got renewed life because of a U.S. Supreme Court
ruling last month that an Indiana voter ID law was constitutional.
