Voters in the Valley Falls school district have given the thumbs up to improvements for their schools.

A $3.5 million bond issue passed Tuesday by a vote of 754 yes to 280 no. The money will go toward a second gymnasium, a vocational-tech building, classrooms and a fitness center.

Some voters were concerned about the property tax increase the bond would mean.

Superintendent David Grove says board members will talk about the next steps at their meeting Monday.

Wow, Well I don't know what to think. Sorry to all the folks that I have offended. I hope the poor renters don't catch to much flak for filling the landlords pocket with equity. I hope the renters, whom I would assume would rather buy, only if they could afford to.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 10, 2008 at 02:15 PM
I'll tell you why, cause Valley Falls is full of ignorant people, like the ones that voted for this proposal, same ones hiring all the secretaries. Idiots.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 10, 2008 at 04:59 AM
Our school board has problems. We have the least enrollment in years but yet more secretaries, teacher aides, etc. and yet we cut back on a teacher instead of secretaries. Why so many? We have computers now.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 9, 2008 at 09:29 AM
LOL....is ANY of this doin any good???

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 03:48 PM
We as citizens have the right to voice our opinions on matters like this, that will affect our families and our way of life. This is taking a chunk of my money, food off of my table, putting more hardships on my family, taking money out of my childrens inheritance. Why should we shut up and move on. This is something that I will continue to voice my opinion on, as long as its taking my money, I will make sure people know how I feel about it. Thats my right, so try to stop.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 03:43 PM
What will all of us do who are paying for this bond do when the school board raises the school misc. tax on the tax statement. It could cost us a fortune. They will do it too because they don't have extra money to pay the cost of maintaining this new building. And I'm talking about the people who are actually paying for this, not the renters or people who don't own property. They shouldn't even have gotten a vote as far as I'm concerned because it won't affect them one bit.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 02:23 PM
I think we should act like adults, when we were kids we were told it's done, so get over it and move on.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Either John is lying about the cigarette story or he is hanging out with a bunch of junkies! Only a crackhead would buy cigarettes instead of milk for a child. What kind of people are you associated with John?

Posted by: AL on May 8, 2008 at 11:09 AM
I VOTED NO!!! AND I AM PROUD OF IT!!I THINK THE COUNT IS WRONG SO I WILL KEEP DOING WHAT I AM DOING!! I KNOW MORE THAN YOU!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Sounds to me like John has got a story for everything, I live in this town too, and I dont know anyone who would give up milk for their kids and still buy their cigarettes, I think you're a liar. As for this town, This town will never grow, it has only went to downhill in the past 20 years, it will keep heading that way. Cause people who want to live a a bigger city will move away and find a bigger city, not sit around investing money, and hoping.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 09:26 AM
John there hasn't been any growth in this town for over 100 years, where have you been? There won't be either. A new big gym will not attract new residents. Get over yourself. You guys keep telling everbody that and it just isn't true. If you believe that then you are ignorant. I've lived in Valley most of my life and I wish we would grow, but we won't and can't. Nowhere to expand to. Government land surrounds us and you know that. See the facts as they are and not what a lot of us wish they could be. This is a waste of money. And no I don't know anybody who gave up milk to buy cigs. I'm not saying this isn't true, I just don't know anybody who has done that. You must know more "rougher" people then I do.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 09:18 AM
Your right John, change is coming but not for the better. I wonder if our school will have the money to pay the additional diesel bill, utilities, maint., etc. They didn't the last time. Nobody ever thinks these things out before they react or else they just don't want to accept the fact that we can't afford it.

I VOTED YES!! AND I AM PROUD OF IT!! I THINK THE COUNT IS RIGHT SO GET OVER IT! I KNOW MORE THAT VOTED YES THAN NO!!

To whoever wrote 'Nobody is whining and crying around about anything, this is a comments forum, if you dont like the opinions of the people of this town "The true taxpayers", then maybe YOU should do without internet access so you dont feel obligated to write snipe remarks to the people that are going to be paying for this. Good Lord!" Ok,Fist off, I AM FROM VALLEY FALLS and will be paying for this and also would GLADLY do without internet.... I just choose not to let this bother me! I'm just thankful for what I have and that we are all alive and breathing....this is no worse than what we are paying for gas and groceries now....things could be soo much worse....yes, this is a comments forum and everything damn thing written in it isn't goin to make this any better!!

Posted by: John on May 8, 2008 at 08:13 AM
I do own land, several hundred acres and a couple of houses in this district so I do pay taxes here.I don't like tax increases. But It looks like a lot of people wanted this addition. I do understand why Valley can't grow and progress, some people don't like change, but this is what creates growth. Did wyandotte county take a chance with the Legends? Most would say the tax increase here was benificial to the tax base. Granted a school won't drive this type of growth, but change is going to happen like it or not. People I know are giving up milk for their kids because it is expensive, but they still afford their cigs. These people don't want to give up their habit, but will give up milk for the kids. WOW

Dont know who decides who runs the elections, but maybe we should demand a recount!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Come on people we are in a recession. Now was not the time to go in this kind of debt. Its hard enough making a living without adding more hardship. And things will get worse before they get better. You must all have better paying jobs then I do or more money. Possibly mommy and daddy helping you? Don't want to hear you cry when the tax statements come out next November. To make it fair, the people who don't own property that voted for this ought to kick in around $1,500 - $2,000 per year to help pay the debt down quicker. Why should we take care of their kids and let them off the hook. They can talk a big game but yet they won't pay anything towards this bond. I don't think they should have gotten to vote!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Something seems kinda shady here. Who decides who runs the election?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 09:58 PM
Lets all just support Jeff West like alot of the families are. If we send our kids there we won't have to pay for this bond. Sound like a plan?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 09:51 PM
I find it strange that Gerri wrote her "letter to the editor" that she doesn't want people commuting to Jeff West or Jeff North but yet her own daughter hauls her kids to Jeff West every day. Since the bond passed does this mean Jo will bring her kids back to Valley Falls? I doubt it! Talk about not supporting your own home town and school. The old saying "Do as I say, not as I do"! WOW!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 07:29 PM
We all seem to be against this, How did this get passed, I'm thinking something must be corrupt. Kinda odd the same person who wrote "letter to the editor" a week prior trying to influence voter to vote "yes" same person in charge of the ballots and votes on day of election!?! Maybe we should have had an outside source running this election, huh??

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 06:29 PM

Hey "Stick it farmers" that was pretty rude. If it wasn't for farmers you wouldn't eat. You obviously don't know what farming is about. You probably don't even own property so you won't pay a penny towards this building. Get the fat kids off the video games and cell phones and make them go outside and ride their bikes and we wouldn't need a fitness center. Their parents are to blame for them being fat feeding them crap all the time and not making them do anything. Now it seems it's the school's responsibility to try to trim them down with a fitness center. Big deal, they'll just go home, sit on their butts and eat some more. Lost Cause!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 05:08 PM
John, John, John, you need help.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: valley on May 7, 2008 at 04:57 PM
i think in my opinion thats thats was a stupid mistake for the gym when are they going to use it and where is it going to be built i hope that i doesn't go threw all the way because there not really a good treason to build another on the on we have is in fine shape you people just want to spend money that people and including your self may be don't have ..... hope that it doesn't go threw

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Let the big oil companies pay for this. They seem to have all the money. The country is in a mess and headed towards disaster. I just hope we don't have to pay for a school and big gym that's not in use, which seems to be coming sooner then we think. Hope that doesn't happen but it's coming new gym or not. 20 years, yikes!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:45 PM
I don't know any rich farmers or as far as that goes to many rich business owners either. I think we are all screwed!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:20 PM
I dont' think John has a clue as to what he is talking about on anything. The state does not pay 55%. And even if your figures were right John, we are back up to 3.3 million. Do the math. You are misinformed.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:12 PM
I thought school was about education not a wrestling program. Am I wrong?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:08 PM
How about the good folks pulling those college kids home from college to vote for a bond issue that they will never pay for. Way to go! Most of them will never live here again anyway once they leave college. Nothing here. No Jobs!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:06 PM
By the way John the state will pay 45% not 55% and it was not posted in your brochures what the farmers or businesses will pay. Only residential owners. Go back and read that and you will find that is the fact. Plus half the people who voted for this don't even own property so they won't pay one red cent towards this school. If you don't own property you can't be taxed? Isn't that right? Get your facts straight.

Posted by: AL Location: Valley Falls on May 7, 2008 at 12:21 PM
I think they got the votes backwards. No one in their right mind would have voted yes on this ridiculous proposal. This was definitely fixed and I demand a recount. Let's try concentrating on the more important matters at hand, like the fact that our businesses are getting burglarized on a weekly basis. I'd be more than willing to vote yes on a proposal to increase taxes to get some real law enforcement around this town.

Posted by: Doug on May 7, 2008 at 11:50 AM
I'm not talking about myself, apparently, I can afford anything I want, internet access, beer, cigarettes, trips to the casino, and the occasional dip of chew. I think we as citizens of this town should not only consider whats best for the kids of this town, but whats needed for the elderly. Because lets get real here, a good education is not based on a fancy building or a new gymnasium. Its based on the teaching abilities, and whether the kids in this town actually "want" to learn. So lets just see if this actually improves this failing town, or if it just a BIG waste of money. GOOD LORD!!

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 11:22 AM
WOW....judging by the comments I think maybe some can afford to give up internet access so they can't whine and cry on here anymore.....it passed....lets just move on......good lord!

Posted by: Doug on May 7, 2008 at 10:43 AM
I feel like moving out of this town because of this being passed. This is going to cost this town BIG. Most of the population in this town are people on fixed incomes, or retirement. These people cant afford that 30 cents a day. Cause half of them cant afford their medications for the month, so what John, give up their insulin to pay for a school full of unappreciating kids??? Whatever!!!

Posted by: BW on May 7, 2008 at 09:00 AM
Regarding the comment about farmers not reporting government payments..they do report government payments on the Schedule F. Yes, they may have large assets but those are usually leveraged with loans to buy that land, machinery, livestock and operating loans. Input prices are increasing more than the prices being paid for the commodities. Not all farmers are broke, but not all of them are rich. Don't knock the folks that put the food on your table.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 07:56 AM
Hey John put your last name on. Anybody can say their name is John. John Smith? John Doe? Doesn't sound like your too bright. Sounds like you were misimformed. Another patron misinformed again. Maybe some of the patrons can give up beer for a day to pay for this, how about you?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 07:48 AM
Wow John, You wouldn't eat witout the farmers. What a true idiot you must be. I don't really know any rich farmers but I do know alot of mid to late 30 year olds that have never gone without anything and usually get what they want, just like they did now.

Posted by: john Location: valley on May 6, 2008 at 11:18 PM
Bond issue at $3,500,000 million dollars. Minus the 55% from state of KS. Brings us to $1,925,000. 30 years at 4% interest brings us to a total repayment of $3,308,488. Now lets divide this amount by the number of voters 1034, or $3199.70 each, divide by 30 years 106.66. Now divide by 365. What do you come up with I come up with about .30 cents per day per voter. Don't drink that coke, smoke that cigarette, or chew the chew. Maybe someone will have to cut back on the casion trips. Give me a break.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 6, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Jeff west has wrestling valley doest you do what is best for your kids. That person knew what the secial ed room was like and if you are against go to that room tommorrow and look at it

Posted by: John on May 6, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Why not post my comments about the farmer. We all know it is the truth? Plus I put my name on it.

Posted by: Stick it farmers on May 6, 2008 at 11:01 PM
I am glad that Valley has actually done somthing good and hasn't done somthing stupid. Hopefully they go through with the whole plan and not what they did with the rec Commission (what happened to the building?) No instead we do somthing halfass, yep that is the Valley way and maybe this changes it.

Posted by: John Location: Valley Falls on May 6, 2008 at 10:48 PM
But they did tell us what the farmer would pay. The numbers where in the informational brochure that was made available. Perhaps we have another uninformed patron. My experience with farmers that own a lot of land also own a decent amount of cash. Maybe on paper farmers don't have a large amount of reported income. But lets look at all of the deductions allowed them by the IRS. Do they have to claim LDP payments, CRP payments. Give me a break. Farmers are broke because they tell you they are broke. Just ask one.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 6, 2008 at 10:48 PM
I agree. If you want to support our school then send your kids to OUR SCHOOL! You know who you are. If you want to send your kids to Jeff West then why don't you move there yourself?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 6, 2008 at 10:36 PM
I hope everybody have their pocketbooks open as this is going to cost big! The majority will be paid for by the farmers and businesses. They said the average on a $100,000 home would be about $118.00 per year. They didn't say what the businesses or farmers would pay. Try around $2,000 plus per farmer depending on how much land you own. As far as the businesses go, there are not many businesses left in this town but some people think the new improvements will attract new people to the school district and business district. It won't. With diesel $4.25 per gallon and rising people will be moving out as they have been. There are already a lot of kids that live in Valley Falls and don't even attend our school. They commute to other schools. Some of these same kids parents were promoting the bond issue. WHY? They don't even support the school in the town they live in. Not a smart move Valley Falls. Valley cannot afford this bond. And thats the bottom line!
