It's time to evaluate where the Royals are at the break. That's the subject for tonight's "On the Mark".
We all know that five wins better at this time than last season isn't much ... but, at least it's something.
Improvement measured in baby steps is better than none at all. But, the team isn't the buzz of Major League Baseball. Far from it. and Kansas City fans... have already proven they can be patient.
So... what's good about the Royals?
For one... the team is finally in possession of a bonafied all-star. In 40 games this year, relief pitcher Joakim Soria has compiled 25 saves to go with a one point 47 earned run average.
With outfielder David DeJesus having a career season -- the Royals are out of last place and are in position to make a climb.
(?)What's wrong with Kansas City(?)
No team in baseball has the acquired the horrible habit of putting together a losing streak like the Royals can.
A change of managers hasn't changed that.
Take away that 12 game losing skid, and Kansas City would be having a pretty nice season.
Instead --- that --- and the unbelievable ability to make critical mistakes at the worst times has the team tranforming from brilliant to ridiculous --- often in the same inning.
On pace for a 73 win season --- Manager Trey Hillman has the team headed toward its best season since 2003. And still--- I think there's a general feeling that the Royals could be better. Look for the Royals to trade away pitcher Gil Meche to build toward next season. Here's hoping that someday soon... Kansas City will be playing for now... instead of always... waiting until next Summer.
That's "On the Mark".
