"On the Mark" - Topeka Baseball

Having pondered all the possibilities, what would be the right choice for Summer baseball in Topeka?
That’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. Like me, you may have lost track of the on going saga about the concept for a ballpark, and the idea of putting an independent team in it. It’s been two years since a consultant told the Topeka City Council that such a combination could draw up to three thousand to a game on a Summer night. But still, nothing has come of any suggestions. Meanwhile… the Kansas City T-Bones and Wichita Wingnuts are off and running.
Of course, a natural partner for those two would be a team in Topeka.
And a new stadium for the new team could be an anchor to attract other economic potential around it. Sounds like a home run… But, of course it’s not.
Both a stadium and an independent team would need guaranteed financial backing that at this point, just isn’t there. So… why not build around what we already have. The amateur Golden Giants, with their local ties, are Topeka’s baseball team.
But they do need some marketing expertise to draw a crowd.
I could see the organization working out of the same office space as the RoadRunners while they are away. It wouldn’t take much to continue to upgrade the already terrific ballparks like Falley Field, Hummer Park or the SCABA diamonds as the permanent home of the team. Perhaps that’s not a home run… but it is the just the base hit needed to get this rally started for the home team. That’s “On the Mark”.

I think you are absolutely right about the Golden Giants. I try to go to all the games I can and it's a real shame so few people attend. I can't imagine getting 3000 people to go to games here in Topeka. These TGG games are fun to watch and I would like to see them get some more publicity someway. I just don't think there's any way a pro team would be financially sucessful.
