The RoadRunners will be playing for the Robertson Cup.
It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. It goes beyond interesting that the hockey champions would come from Kansas, when the rest of the division comes from Alaska and Texas. The RoadRunners accomplishment is further magnified by the length of the season. When high school football teams opened up their Fall work-outs in August, the RoadRunners did too.
When football ended, they were at mid-season and when basketball wrapped up, the RoadRunners were just beginning their playoff run.
That the team had to rally continually from behind in the standings, on the scoreboard, and the overtime manner in which they won, serves as a testament to the never give up kind of attitude we all appreciate, no matter what the sport. That they are now one of four teams playing for the Robertson Cup also requires a bit of an introduction.
It’s the oldest, and some would say most respected trophy in junior hockey.
Chuck Robertson, coached a team to seven consecutive titles in Michigan the late 70’s and 80’s.
Jilted twice before by hockey franchises, Topeka has slowly warmed up to the transplants from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
That the high school aged athletes have turned out to be friendly ambassadors has turned out to be a huge bonus. In other words… it’s easy to like this team. So likeable are they, in fact, that I think even Chuck Robertson wouldn’t mind if the RoadRunners won his Cup. That’s “On the Mark”.
