With high school’s winter sports rolling from one championship into another, I wanted to call attention to the next one on the calendar you might not have considered.
It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. The state’s bowling championships are set for this Saturday at Gage Center.
It will signal the continuation of an experiment that is clearly working. Four years ago, just 28 high schools offered bowling as a varsity sport.
Now, more than sixty Kansas High schools have bowling teams. Why the explosion in popularity? Because the sports’ start up and maintenance costs have proven to be affordable. But, beyond that..
as a published quote from one wise area high school coach reads… physically… you can’t spot a bowler.
In other words, it’s not just for the strong and the swift.
That might be the prime reason why bowling has translated into yet another avenue for kids to compete, gain pride in themselves and their school. The bonus is learning a lifetime sport… and … as we all frankly know … kids with something to do, aren’t as likely to do something they shouldn’t. As another state championship weekend approaches, gambling on giving their students a chance to express themselves athletically on the lanes has turned out to be a brilliant roll for several local high schools. Not bad for a sport that, not long ago, took a lot of convincing to get school boards --- on board. That’s “On the Mark”.
