They will be fighting for first place on Wednesday night.
It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. For longtime Sunflower Showdown watchers, there is acknowledgement that this mid-week game the Cats and Hawks are about to play is taking on special overtures. Because both are ranked, and unbeaten in league play, the outcome will be shared nationwide.
And… the country will hear about a legacy created by a history that deserves being told in an accessible manner.
Of Boozer, Rolando, Tex and Jack… of Wilt, Jo Jo, Phog and Ted. Of course, we all know the great rivalry has been stuck on the same page since about 1984.
In fact, it’s on page 77 in K-State’s basketball media guide where the Wildcats record in Bramlage against the Jayhawks is officially listed as a staggering oh and 19. There was a 19-88 game where the Final Four was at stake, but for the most part, the great stories of this rivalry still come from the days of the disco era, the space race, and the cold war.
Those old K-State vs.
K-U games, and the men that played and coached in them are larger than life, because both programs won thrillers, and lost heartbreakers. This game finds new elements in place.
Potentially the nation’s best college player will try to stop the streak from turning silver against arguably the nation’s best team.
Only time will tell if the page will turn.
That’s “On the Mark”
