An arrest of a former Topeka athlete is putting a school and its athletic program under scrutiny. It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”.
A week ago, Lamont Austin was one of three Missouri State basketball players who turned themselves in to Springfield, Missouri police following an investigation over stolen video equipment.
Austin is a freshman guard from Highland Park.
He is, of course, innocent, until proven guilty. Missouri State basketball coach Barry Hinson said nothing should be read into his decision to suspend the players before the legal system ran its course.
But, partially because there are also football players on that campus involved in legal troubles, the timing couldn’t be worse.
There is a published report that Missouri State boosters are demanding that there be an improved screening process in place for incoming recruits. And… here's the point.
It’s purpose would be to weed out the bad kids before they are given scholarships.
Of course, we know Lamont Austin is not a bad kid. Often told they are under scrutiny because of their high profile, the message typically hits home only after something like this happens. Because he carries the hopes of a school and a city, I hope that an explanation is forthcoming.
Regardless... Lamont Austin's current experience does serve notice to young athletes who will follow --- that it takes only a few minutes of a bad decision to ruin a lifetime of hard earned respect. That’s “On the Mark”.

I agree as well. It's amazing how quick everyone around here was ready to convict him, so sure he was guilty of a crime. His community and school are under scrutiny because of this. People need to step back and scrutinize themselves before passing judgment.

Just had to comment for all of the people who were so very sure Lamont was guilty. How about all of you eating some crow or humble pie. Lamont was free of all charges, HE IS INNOCENT. He made a mistake and will have to live with that. Now it is time to move on and do what he does best and that is to be the best he can be. I was proud of him before and I am still proud of him. He came forward and took the heat and never let that stop him. So, lets stop with the gang member stuff and the scrutinizing about did he or not, was he or was he not. That does not matter anymore what does matter is he is innocent.

I personally know Lamont and he is a good kid, very respectful at all times. I am also a resident in the Highland Park area, son and nephews graduated from HPHS. It's a shame that anytime something bad happens on that side of town, it's blown out of proportion, becomes a big topic of conversation all over town. Things happen all over Topeka and we barely hear about them. As far as Lamont, he should not be judged or scrutinized because of where he grew up or went to school. A year ago EVERYONE in Topeka were singing the praises of him, now guilty until proven innocent, is that how we do it?

A known gang member and you know this because you are with the Topeka Police?

Lamont is a known gang member with the Topeka police department, so maybe he is not as good of a kid as most think. Remember he was shot at last year while at his grandmothers house right before a home basketball game. Just my two cents.
