Despite all the bad football they’ve played this season, Kansas City is in a division they could win.
How the AFC West went so wrong is the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. Evolving philosophy in Oakland, coaching change in San Diego, injuries in Denver and a youth movement in Kansas City are to blame.
Kansas City’s lack of an offense, however, seems to be as much bad planning, as poor tactics. The team misses retired lineman Willie Roaf and Will Shields far more than Larry Johnson, and that’s a question that has never been adequately addressed. When both of those players so obviously coming to the end of their pro bowl caliber careers, why did the Chiefs not develop talent from within to take their place? Ask all those fans that left the stadium during the fourth quarter of yesterday’s game if it looks like the Chiefs can block.
A decision to seek replacements through free agency rather than grow players through the draft has created a personnel gaffe which I don’t think will be solved easily. The Chiefs are making game changing mistakes because its offensive line is just not adequate.
Kansas City’s loss to a very average Denver team yesterday was its third in their Arrowhead Stadium home.
The good news? The Chiefs have been terrible and can still make the playoffs.
Why? Because it’s the season in which the West is all wrong... which at this point --- is just all right for Kansas City. That’s “On the Mark”.
