The Jayhawks are in the National Championship picture. It’s never been said in regard to football ---which is exactly why a "BCS" primer is in order.
It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. There are three items which decide the Bowl Championship Series rankings.
The coaches poll is one.
Then, there’s the Harris poll… which is voted on by media members and former players, coaches and administrators.
And the third element are six computers.
I don’t know how your computer works, but I know mine doesn’t listen to reason. Tradition, bowl game appearances, conference championships won, merchandise sold, and number of network TV appearances is not supposed be a B-C-S component, although each of the computers uses strength of schedule as a factor.
That the Jayhawks schedule ranks 85th in the country in that category will not help K-U’s cause. Each of the components counts as one third, the best and worst rankings are thrown out, and the sum total of the remaining four is divided by 100 to come up with the B-C-S computer rankings. Where’s this going? The B-C-S system has its flaws.
It would prefer Oklahoma to Kansas.
The Jayhawks, perfect through nine Saturdays, won’t be granted any margin for error by either humans or computers. Victories in all 12 games plus the Big 12 title game will be required to put the Jayhawks in New Orleans.
How do we know this? Because the BCS has its own history, and it tells us that in order for Kansas to get a title shot, the Jayhawks will have to win ‘em all. That’s “On the Mark”.
