We are on the eve of the High School Football playoffs.
It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. It should be considered prestigious to make it. And, I hope I don’t dilute the honor when I tell you that a total of 112 playoff games will be staged by midnight on saturday.
If getting more opportunities for more teams to experience the playoffs is considered a success, than the system is a working.
But… every once in a while, you get a team like Sabetha.
The Bluejays won every game except one, and that one loss resulted in their coming up on the short end of the mathematics in a loaded Class 3-A District one field.
On the other end of it, by my count, of the 80 teams which made the playoffs, 27 of them have a losing record and six of those teams won only two games.
I’m not sure there is a flawless playoff system, but I do think it is time to consider making some adjustments.
I wonder if an eight game regular season, capped with a “seeded” one game "make or break" bracket format should be considered.
And… I will say again that every league champion should be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Those two things would make the regular season more meaningful, the finish more defining, and the post season … more honorable. That’s “on the mark”.
