CNN) -- Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine has denied a clemency request from lawyers for John Allen Muhammad, the mastermind behind the Washington-area sniper attacks of 2002, according to Kaine's office.

Muhammad, 48, is scheduled to die by lethal injection Tuesday evening at a state prison near Jarratt, Virginia.
