MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) - Mexican soldiers have captured the second-in-command of one of the nation's most ruthless drug cartels, the government's military announced.

Carlos Adrian Martinez Muniz, identified as the No. 2 person in the Zetas drug cartel, was arrested in the municipality of Apodaca in northeastern Mexico after officials received an anonymous tip, the nation's Ministry of Defense said Wednesday. In addition to various drugs and weapons, he was carrying deposit slips for up to 7,150 people, the ministry said.

Los Zetas, formed by former Mexican army soldiers, consists mostly of former federal and local police. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency considers the group to be among the most advanced and violent of Mexico's drug cartels.
