(CNN) - An assault on the campus of California State University at Sacramento Wednesday resulted in a university police officer shooting the alleged assailant, an official with the Sacramento Police Department said.

"There was a victim that was assaulted apparently (with) a bat. Campus police officers responded to the suspect after he charged at them with a knife, and fired shots," Sacramento Police Department officer Norm Leong said.

University police responded to the incident inside one of the school's northern campus dorms around 3 p.m. PT (6 p.m. ET), Leong said. The suspect and the victim of the assault, both males, were transported to area hospitals. Their conditions and identities were not immediately known, Leong said.

"We can't confirm if they were students, but this happened in a dorm with student card-key access," Leong said. Officers were not looking for others suspects in the incident and the campus is secure, Leong said.
