K-State Adds Murphy for 2013-14 Season

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson announced on Wednesday the signing of Jailen Murphy to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) during the April signing period. With the addition of Murphy, K-State has signed five players for the 2013-14 season.

Murphy, a 5-9 guard from Nashville, Tenn., helped Brentwood Academy to an 18-10 record and a state runner-up finish in the 2012-13 season. Coached by Rhonda Brown at Brentwood, Murphy averaged 15.0 points, while shooting 59% from three-point range. Murphy also pulled in 5.0 rebounds, pocketed 3.0 steals and blocked 2.0 shots in her senior campaign.

For her efforts with the Eagles, Murphy earned All-Region honors in her senior and freshman seasons. She also garnered team most improved honors at the conclusion of her junior season after she recovered from a knee injury during her sophomore season. Murphy is also a versatile athlete, competing in volleyball and softball for Brentwood Academy.

"Jai is an athletic wing with a very solid shooting stroke,” stated Patterson about her newest signee. “She will bring a tremendous work ethic and strong fundamental foundation of skills from her Brentwood Academy experience. Her personal character and commitment to academics make her a great fit for our program."

Murphy joins a K-State signing class that includes four signees from the November signing period. Those four signees were: forwards Breanna Lewis, Jessica Sheble and Erica Young and guard Kindred Wesemann. Lewis, Sheble and Young all check in at 6-3 or taller with Lewis at 6-5, and Sheble and Young at 6-3. Lewis will be tied for the second-tallest player in K-State women’s basketball history and the tallest on the roster since Nicole Ohlde (2001-04). Sheble and Young are the seventh and eighth players in the program’s history to check in at a height of 6-3.
