Late First Half Run Leads Lady Blues To Win Over Northwest Missouri

Washburn Sweeps Northwest Missouri

TOPEKA, Kan. -- A 16-1 run late in the first half for the Lady Blues helped them survive 64 percent shooting in the second half by Northwest Missouri in a 64-53 win over the Bearcats Saturday at Schendel Court at Lee Arena.

No. 9 Washburn won its sixth straight game and improved to 17-3 overall and 11-1 in the MIAA. Northwest Missouri was able to break Washburn's streak of five straight games keeping opponents under 50 points but fell to 11-10 and 5-8 with the loss.

Laura Kinderknecht went 4 of 8 from 3-point range and led Washburn with 14 points. Tiara George came off the bench for 12 points as she was 6 of 9 from the field and Dana Elliott scored nine points. Elliott was 3 of 4 from the field and led Washburn with six assists.

Washburn trailed 13-12 at the 11:43 mark of the first half and then Casyn Buchman hit a layup on a fast break at 10:07 to give the Lady Blues the lead. They kept it for good as they went on a 12-0 run to go up 25-13 with 5:32 to play. Six different Washburn players scored during the run.

The Bearcats broke the streak with a free throw but Lavonda McCall answered with a 3-pointer to end the 16-1 run and give Washburn a 28-14 lead with 3:00 to go. NWMSU hit a 3-pointer at 2:15 and no one scored after that, giving Washbrn a 28-17 halftime lead.

Washburn shot 50 percent (11 of 22) in the first half and the Bearcats were just 6 of 18 (33 percent) from the field.

The Bearcats came out of the locker room to shoot 64 percent (14 of 22) and ended the game shooting right at 50 percent, becoming the first Washburn opponent to shoot 50 percent or better and just the third to top 40 percent.

Despite the hot shooting, Washburn only allowed the Bearcats withing single digits once in the second half. Washburn forced 15 second half turnovers on NWMSU and had a game-high 18-point lead when Elliott hit a 3-pointer with 6:15 to go.

The Lady Blues ended shooting 44 percent and they had a 29-20 advantage on rebounds with 18 turnovers while Northwest Missouri had 24. Washburn blocked six shots to Northwest's one.

Maggie Marnin led the Bearcats with 17 points as she went 8 of 12 from the field. Annie Matthews was 5 of 7 form 12 points.
