No. 1 Baylor Tops Kansas, 86-45

WACO, Texas – Offense was tough to come by Wednesday night for the Kansas women’s basketball team as it was held to a season-low point total in an 86-45 loss to No. 1-ranked Baylor at the Ferrell Center.

Kansas dropped to 14-7 on the season and 5-5 in Big 12 Conference play. Junior CeCe Harper and sophomore Asia Boyd each scored double digits for the Jayhawks. Harper finished with 11 points and Boyd added 10.

The 41-point loss was fourth-largest in school history for the Jayhawks. Baylor improved to 21-1 and 11-0, respectively. Reigning national player of the year Brittney Griner scored a game-high 26 points and added 13 rebounds.

“We weren’t as aggressive,” Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “We got a little anxious and honestly we didn’t shoot the ball well. We got some good looks that we knocked down and then some were rushed and that’s exactly what they do.”

Thanks to the first-career three-pointer by Chelsea Gardner, Kansas and Baylor were knotted, 5-5, at the 17:08 mark in the first half. The Lady Bears countered Gardner’s longball with a 15-0 run to take a 20-5 lead with 12:11 on the clock. The Jayhawks nearly matched Baylor point-for-point the remainder of the half and trailed, 45-24, at the break.

Griner tossed in 19 first-half points for BU, while Gardner led the Jayhawks with seven points in the first 20 minutes. The 21-point deficit was the largest for the Jayhawks this season. Gardner finished the game with seven points.

The Jayhawks were never able to cut into the lead, as the Lady Bears opened the second half with a 23-5 run to take a commanding 68-29 advantage. Kansas shot a season-low 27.7 percent from the floor (18-for-65), while Baylor shot 56.7 percent (38-for-67) which was the best by a KU opponent this season.

Kansas will be back in action Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse for a 2 p.m. contest against West Virginia.
