Wild Saturday Highlights MIAA Basketball

Kansas City, Mo. – It was a full Saturday of play in the MIAA including one set of games played on National Television.

Northwest Missouri at Pittsburg State
WBB - #17 PSU 76, NWMSU 47
#17 Pittsburg State outrebounded Northwest Missouri 46-30 as the pulled off the victory in a game played on CBS College Sports Network. The Gorillas held the Bearcats to just .321 shooting in the NCAA Division II National Game of the Week.

For the Gorillas Alexa Bordewick led the way with 20 points while LIzzy Jeronimus added 14 points. Lauren Brown had a monster game on the glass pulling down 22 of the teams rebounds. For the Bearcats Tember Schechinger led the way with 13 points in the contest. Maggie Marnin just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.

MBB – NWMSU 62, PSU 51
Northwest Missouri shot .460 from the field and forced 19 turnovers as they picked up a win over Pittsburg State in from of a national television audience. The Bearcats also outrebounded the Gorillas as the picked up their fourth win in league play.

For the Bearcats Dillons Starzl led the way with 16 points while DeAngelo Hailey added 15 points. Alex Sullivan finished with 13 points and five rebounds in the contest. For the Gorillas Courtney Ingram scored 14 points and added five rebounds. Marky Nolan and JaVon McGee each finished with 11 points and McGee added eight boards.

Truman State at Lindenwood
WBB – TSU 86, LWU 65
Truman State led by only four at the half but extended that lead in the second period to move to 3-1 in league play. Truman shot .550 from the field and .630 from the three-point line in the victory.

For the Bulldogs Becka McHenry led the way with 20 points while Amy Briggs added 16 in the game. Allie Norton had 13 points while Jennifer Conway led the team with six rebounds. For the Lions Caroline Bourlioux had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Julie Hlinak led the team with 15 points while Marissa Lehnig added 11 points in the contest.

MBB – LWU 96, TSU 82
Lindenwood jumped out to a 14 point first half advantage and made that hold up as they picked up their first MIAA win. The Lions shot .560 from the field and outrebounded Truman State 40-21 on the afternoon.

For the Lions Alex Bazzell had a double-double with 22 points and 11 assists. Brett Thompson had 18 points and nine boards while Richie Thompson added 18 points and seven rebounds. For the Bulldogs Seth Jackson had 20 points and Mike Carlson finished with 17 points. Cory Myers scored 14 on the afternoon and Tom Norton finished with 13 points.

Washburn at Central Oklahoma
WBB - #6 WU 62, UCO 58
Central Oklahoma nearly erased a nine-point deficit with two minutes to play getting the #6 Washburn lead to as low as three. The Lady Blues hung on hitting a free-throw with six seconds to play to push the lead to two possessions.

For the Lady Blues Laura Kenderknecht led the way with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sierra Moeller finished with 13 points and five rebounds in the contest. For the Bronchos Savannah Hamilton had 14 points while Britney Morgan finished with 10 points. On the glass both Chelsea Robinson and Alyssa Fuxa had six boards in the contest.

MBB – UCO 72, # 8 WU 67
Washburn trailed Central Oklahoma by 20 points at the half and came up shy in a furious comeback. The Bronchos held the Ichabods to just .280 shooting in the upset victory at home.

For the Bronchos Josh Gibbs had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Spencer Smith had 15 points and seven rebounds and June Carter had 13 points and five rebounds. For the Ichabods Martin Mitchell led all scorers with 21 points and six rebounds. Kyle Wiggins had 17 points and Will McNeill added 14 points.

Southwest Baptist at Lincoln
WBB – LU 77, SBU 65
Lincoln erased a three-point halftime deficit to earn a 77-65 victory at home against Southwest Baptist. Lincoln finished shooting .636 from behind the three-point line as they sealed their second MIAA win.

For the Blue Tigers Dahlia Booker had 18 points and Freddie Sims added 15 in the effort. They were joined in double figures by Arriana Walker with 14 points and Roni Jefferson with 10 points. For the Bearcats Chasity Prince led the way with 13 points and Leann Lansdown had 12 for SBU. Joining them in double figures were Tanis Spani with 11 points and Brittney Dukes with 10 points.

MBB – SBU 81, LU 74
Southwest Baptist held on to a five point lead at the half as they picked up a road victory at Lincoln. Lincoln shot .545 in the game but allowed SBU 10 more made free throws that proved to be the difference in the game.

For the Bearcats Preston Guiot scored a team best 26 points. Damion Hooks added 16 points and Gilbert Gyamfi scored 15 points in the contest. For the Blue Tigers Cedric Ridle led all scorers with 33 points on the afternoon. Shakir Preston had 12 points and Brandon Stanciel led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.

Fort Hays State at Emporia State
WBB – ESU 69, #10 FHSU 54
Emporia State used a strong second half to erase a 33-26 deficit at the break and upset #10 Fort Hays State. The Lady Hornets outscored the Tigers 43-21 in the second period to earn a big home victory.

For the Lady Hornets Laura Patrick led the way with 18 points while Rachel Hanf finished with 11 points. Jocelyn Cummings had 10 points and seven rebounds and Desiree Wylie added 10 points and eight boards. For the Tigers Kate Lehman had a double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Katelyn Edwards finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

MBB – FHSU 79, ESU 76
Fort Hays State’s Ben Congiusta hit a three-pointer with four second remaining in regulation to tie the game and help his team to an overtime win at Emporia State. ESU shot .510 in the game but did not score in the final 1:39 of overtime after cutting the FHSU lead to just one point.

For the Tigers Dwayne Brunson had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Conguista finished with 16 points joined by Lance Russell with 16 and Craig Nicholson with 15 points. For the Hornets Chris Sight led five ESU players in double figures with 16 points. Kaleb Wright and Paul Bunch each scored 13 points while Terrence Moore had 11 and Tre Boutlier 10 points.

Nebraska-Kearney at Northeastern State
WBB – NSU 85, UNK 57
Northeastern State held Nebraska-Kearney to just 18 points in the first half as they earned their fourth straight victory. The RiverHawks scored 48 points in the first half as they took a 30 point lead into the break.

For the RiverHawks Taylor Lewis led all scores with 26 points on the afternoon. Fontanna Tate and Chelsey Stricklen each scored 13 points in the contest. For the Lopers Ivy Jones led the way with 12 points while Nicole Arp, Queen Ohamara and Shelby Zimmerman added 10 each. Daneille Kersten led the way on the glass picked up eight rebounds.

MBB – UNK 60, NSU 57
Nebraska-Kearney picked up their first MIAA win of the season on the road at Northeastern State. The Lopers hit six straight free throws to extend what was a one point lead and seal the victory.

For the Lopers Mike Dentlinger came just shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Jon Henderson added 11 points and Pierre Newton had 10 points and eight rebounds. For the RiverHawks Jermaine Bransford had 18 points and 11 rebounds to pick up a double-double. Bryton Hobbs finished with 11 points and six rebounds on the afternoon.

Missouri Western at Missouri Southern
WBB – MSSU 78, MWSU 76
Missouri Southern shot .500 from the field and .538 in the second half to hold off Missouri Western at home. The second half saw neither team lead by more than four as the lead changed ten times in the second period.

For the Lions Sharese Jones led the way with 17 points and six rebounds. Samantha Soyez added 11 points while Erin Rice and Jolee Sharp each finished with ten points. For the Griffons Heather Howard came just shy of a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds. Denise White had 11 points as Brittany Griswold and Sharniece Lewis each had nine points.

MBB – MSSU 95, MWSU 69
Missouri Southern shot .630 from the three-point line as they picked up a win over Missouri Western at home. MSSU shot .580 overall from the field as they earned their second conference win.

For the Lions Marquis Addison had a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds on the night. Austin Wright added 19 points and Jordan Talbert had 13 points in the contest. For the Griffons Adarius Fulton finished with 14 points and Cedric Clinkscales had 12 points. Alfreeman Flowers finished with 11 points and Dzenana Mrkaijevic finished with ten points.
